Cat House
By Sandra Hedditch
I love my cats I have two Ragdolls very laid back cats. I wanted to get them a nice place of their own to hide out in when the Grandsons came over, well I was shocked at the price of what I can only describe as glorified wooden boxes with cheap fluffy material stuck on. So for hobby week here at Qondio I thought I would tell you how I made my own little cat house. First I found an old T.V cabinet the kind with a glass door and shelf inside for the V.C.R or D.V.D player. I took the door off and pulled the shelf out, next I found an old set of three draws in a second-hand shop and I also bought some fun fur fabric there too. I took the bottom out of one draw and covered one side of it with the fur using heavy duty staples and used it to cover the gap at the back of the T.V stand where the wiring use to go. Next I glued the fabric all around the inside I got an old pillow and made a cover from the same fabric, and placed it in side, Then with the front of the draw I took the handle off and I wedged the draw front it in at the front of the cabinet, and used screws to hold it in place I took another draw bottom and used my jigsaw to cut an arch way door and covered one side with the fur fabric then slotted it fur facing in behind the front panel ,I had just screwed in. I got a fur padded pet bed from our local cheap shop to put on top so my cats have a roof top bed if they don't want to be inside My cats love it and often play in and around it as well as sleep in there too. I also made a scratching post from a cardboard tube the kind carpet comes on. I went to my local carpet shop and just asked for one as they just throw them out they were happy to let me take what I wanted. I also got some good carpet remnants from there too. So then I got some rope and wrapped it around the tube until it was tightly covered and with the frame from the set of draws I bought earlier I cut a hole in the top and bottom so the tube fitted tightly in the top and pushed it down to fit in the hole at the bottom, quite a lot was sticking out above the top, I cut a circle out of another draw bottom and cut a hole in the middle and slid it on the top of the tube to hold it in place I used staples and an extra wrap of rope under it then covered the top with a remnant of carpet again the cats love it and like climbing up it as well as scratching it. I was told to use sisal rope but it cost an arm and leg to buy so I just used rope that my husband got from a boat he was working on and its just as good, if you think about it cats will scratch anything like the couch or the jeans you are wearing so I'm sure they don't care what its made of you could even wrap carpet around the tube it will work just as well. All this cost me was just $5.00 for the set of draws and a little of my time and that was a lot of fun. I hope I have given you some inspiration and helped you save some money too.
